Jesus’ knowledge of God and himself informed by ‘scripture’

(also referred to as the ‘the Law’ or ‘the prophets’ or ‘it is written’)

But he [Jesus] answered, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out of the mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4 ISV

Jesus said . . . “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Matthew 4:7 NIV

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them.
Matthew 5:17 ESV

When [Jesus] was twelve years old, . . . while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, . . . After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, . . . Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. . . . “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” . . . His mother treasured all these things in her heart.  And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Luke 2: 42‑52 NIV

But Jesus answered . . . , “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God”.
Matthew 22:29 ESV

And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, (emphasis added) John 5:37‑39 NIV

He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” Matthew 21:13 ESV

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” Matthew 21:42 ESV

Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37‑40 NIV

Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Matthew 4:10 ESV

And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour” . . . Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. [Emphasis added.] Luke 4: 17‑19, 21 ESV

Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” Luke 18: 31‑33 NASB

And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory ?" Luke 24:25‑26 NASB

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” Matthew 21:42 ESV

“For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfilment.” Luke 22:37 ESV

Jesus told them, “These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don’t know this about me. You judge me by human standards, but I do not judge anyone. And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me. Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact. I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other.” John 8: 14‑18 NLT

“Who are you?” [the Jews] asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.” They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. So Jesus said, “When you have ‘lifted up’ [i.e., crucified] the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” Even as he spoke, many believed in him. John 8:25‑30 NIV

Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’? If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came —and Scripture cannot be set aside— what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” John 10: 31‑38 NIV
